Civic Contribution
Member of The Garden Club of America, The River Oaks Garden
Club was founded
in 1927 and has made many contributions to
the Houston community in the areas
of conservation, horticulture
and civic beautification. Proceeds from the Azalea Trail
support
these ongoing projects:
- Maintenance of the River Oaks Garden Club Forum of Civics
Building and Gardens. The gardens are open to the public.
- Maintenance of the 14-acre gardens of Bayou Bend, the
former estate
of Miss Ima Hogg, and now the Bayou Bend Collection
and Gardens,
The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
- Establishment of the Bayou Bend Gardens Endowment, a charitable
trust
for the perpetual maintenance of the gardens. The
endowment is supported
by public contributions.
- Host of the annual Sadie Gwin Blackburn Environmental
Seminar,
which is open to the public. Admission is free.
- Publication of A Garden
Book for Houston and the Texas Gulf Coast.

Civic Contribution Recipients for 2009–2010
- Bo’s Place - For seasonal spots of color to help maintain Bo’s Place’s environment
- Brookwood - To underwrite a portion of the 2010 fall bedding plant crop
- Buffalo Bayou Partnership - Towards trees for habitat restoration of the Tapley Tributary of Buffalo Bayou
- Camp Allen – Towards solar panels for the “Little Green Schoolhouse,” a part
of the Discovery Program at Camp Allen. This secular, school-year education program provides students the opportunity to learn about ecology and the environment
- Camp for All - For ranch entrance beautification project
- Cystic Fibrosis/University of Houston - For garden spot and irrigation at
U of H for Cystic Fibrosis’ annual walk-Great Strides, Taking Steps to Cure Cystic Fibrosis
- DePelchin - For landscaping University of Texas charter school on DePelchin campus
- Durham Elementary School A&M Organic Research Garden - For a test garden and prominent signage for new Earthkind roses (collaboration of Bayou Bend through Bart Brechter and Bonnie Campbell, A&M, and ROGC)
- Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugarland - Towards the creation of a large demonstration garden focusing on pollination and green gardening
- Memorial Park Conservancy - To support the Memorial Park Conservancy Forestry Conservation and Management Plan
- Neuhaus Education Center – Funding for a pair of benches and signage in the native garden and along the pathway
- Ronald McDonald House – For fans and outdoor furniture
- University of Houston President’s House - Wortham House - To beautify the flower beds at the front street entrance of the Wortham House
